A campaign group is a selection of advertising campaigns from one or more ad platforms that allows you to create a filter in your dashboard or data set.
Use case
Suppose you want to report on your "Summer discount" cross-platform ad campaign from Google Ads, Facebook Ads and Bing Ads, including a Return on Ad Spend (ROAS)
You want to combine multiple ad platforms before you use them in your dashboard or report
- The more platforms and accounts you want to combine, the more complex the formulas in your dashboard tool become or the more blending you need to do inside your dashboard tool
You want to select only those campaigns related to your Summer discount campaign
- In most cases your Google Ads, Facebook Ads and Bing Ads accounts will have more campaigns than those related to this summer discount campaign.
You want to automatically add new campaigns to your dashboard
- You will probably create new campaigns later on and you do not want to do much manual work to add those to your dashboard
You want to calculate a ROAS
- But you do not want to spend a lot of time linking your ad spend to your Google Analytics revenue.
The solution: Campaign grouping
Follow these step by step instructions to create a campaign group
- Log into Cervinodata (or get a free trial here)
- Click on "Build a Campaign group" under ORGANISE.
- On the Campaign group page, click "Add campaign group"
- Follow the steps in the builder
Select organisation
- Choose the organisation you want to create a campaign group for (you can easily create an organisation here).
Select platforms
- Make sure you include all the platforms you want to have included in your campaign group, AND you can add more platforms or ad accounts / Google Analytics views later.
- If you want to relate your advertising performance to your website revenue (for ROAS), web traffic, etc. make sure you include Google Analytics as one of the platforms.
Select campaigns for [Platform name]
Tip: You can have different filter settings for each platform.
- Selected
- All the campaigns that are on this side will be included in the campaign group.
- You can manually add a campaign by clicking on the campaign in the "Select from: " column. The campaign will switch to the Selected column. Removing the campaign works the other way around.
- Enter filter
- Enter the campaign name in the filter box, press the "Apply filter". All the campaigns from the particular platform that match the filter will switch to the column "Selected" (and be included in the campaign group).
- Use the "|" sign to make it an OR statement, like "Summer|summer" to make sure you capture inconsistenties in campaign names.
- Tips:
- This filter box is a Regex filter, so you can do more advanced stuff if you know how.
- You can use the filter box + apply filter button more than once for more detailed selecting of campaign groups.
- Autoselect
- When the Autoselect checkbox is checked, Cervinodata will automatically add any new campaign(s) to your campaign group.
- This will apply only to all the campaign names from the particular platform that match the regex entered in the edit filter box.
Select campaigns from Google Analytics
If you select Google Analytics at the "Select platforms" stage, you can filter your Google Analytics data by UTM campaign name.
General settings: Start and end data
Last, but not least, you can determine a start and end date.
- The start date: Only those campaigns with data from and after the start-date will be included in the campaign group.
- The end date: You need to fill in an end-date, but this can be far into the future.
Save your Campaign group
- After you save the Campaign group, you will return to the table with all your campaign groups.
- The question now is, where can I use a campaign group?
Using campaign groups
There are multiple places where you can use a campaign group. You can find a summary here:
In Klipfolio
There are 2 ways to get a campaign group into Klipfolio
- By using one of our Cervinodata Klipfolio template dashboards (more info here)
- By creating a campaign group data source in Klipfolio (more info here)
In Looker Studio
- By using the Cervinodata Advanced templates, the Advanced templates include a filter for campaign groups (more info here)
In Google BigQuery
- Created campaign groups will automatically be added to your BigQuery data model during the next automatic sync.
- Go to the query Builder in Cervinodata (here) and select the campaign group(s) you created in the appropriate step.
